Statement by Transportation for Massachusetts Director Kristina Egan on the governor’s signing of the public transit financing package and the Legislature’s passage of Chapter 90 funds
Transportation for Massachusetts and its coalition members applaud the Legislature and the governor for putting in place this temporary funding measure that will prevent additional service cuts and fare increases for the next fiscal year that would have burdened many who rely on both the MBTA and the regional transit authorities.
We also acknowledge the Legislature for passing $200 million in Chapter 90 funds that will allow needed road and bridge repair and construction projects across the state to proceed.
With this stopgap MBTA funding measure in place, and the Chapter 90 funding on its way, it’s now time to focus on creating a permanent and sustainable funding solution that will allow Massachusetts to have a comprehensive, statewide transportation network that includes improved public transit, safe roads and bridges, bike paths, and better sidewalks.
Providing a range of safe, affordable, and convenient transportation options across the state benefits every citizen of the Commonwealth by creating economic opportunity, achieving a better quality of life, and improving their health and wellness.
