STATEMENT BY TRANSPORTATION FOR MASSACHUSETTS ON
GOVERNOR’S ANNOUNCEMENT OF FUNDING SHORTFALL
“Governor Patrick has taken an important first step in fixing and modernizing our transportation system. The state has now defined the funding shortfall that is harming our transportation network. The numbers clearly show we need new sources of revenue.
For too long, we’ve relied on borrowing to operate and maintain our transportation system. This is like using a credit card to pay for your groceries and your mortgage. We are maxed out and the bill has come due. We need to stop avoiding the tough questions and hard decisions.
Good transportation is needed for the state to prosper. Unreliable buses and subways and closed and restricted bridges make it hard to get to jobs, deliver goods, and access education.
With a long-term funding solution – instead of a series of stopgap band aids – we can turn this around. We can make sure that a modern and reliable transportation system spurs job creation and new business opportunities while helping residents get to the places they need to go.
It’s now up to the legislature to take immediate and bold action to move our transportation system out of debt and disrepair and into the 21st century.”
